Why this ban?

Quantity

Trillions of cigarette filters end up in the environment each year. It’s the largest form of litter worldwide.

Costs

Cigarette filter pollution imposes an estimated annual global burden of US$26 billion.

Toxicity

Cigarette filters release thousands of toxic chemicals and are harmful to plants, animals, and microbes.

Deception

Cigarette filters should have never been introduced. They do not decrease the health risks of smoking.

Worldwide action

No Butts Day 2026

On No Butts Day – Saturday July 4th, 2026 – people around the world join forces for the biggest cigarette filter action on the planet. In 2025 thousands of volunteers collected 964,000 cigarette filters from their local streets, parks and waterways. The event originated in The Netherlands in 2019 and grew into an international action. It’s an effective way to raise awareness and drive the message home that a ban on cigarette filters is the only real solution.

Register you own event or join an existing one. The event is coordinated by Bernadette Hakken (‘Het Peukenmeisje’) of the Dutch ‘Plastic Cigarette Butt Collective’.
